Agave Margarita

A take on a classic cocktail – the Agave Margarita! Very simple, potent, and incredibly delicious!

INGREDIENTS

  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1 tbsp agave nectar
  • 2 oz tequila (reposado o blanco)
  • kosher salt

HARDWARE

  • Lime/lemon juicer
  • Jigger
  • Shaker cup
  • Strainer
  • Low ball glass

DIRECTIONS

  1. If you will be using a big fancy ice cube, remove it from the freezer and set it out to temper.
  2. Cut your lime in half.
  3. Cut a lime wheel by slicing a thin slice from one half of the lime. Then, from the center of the lime, cut a slit to the edge. This will be used as garnish.
  4. Juice the lime into a separate container. I highly recommend this step as it is easier than juicing the lime into the jigger when attempting to get correct proportions for the cocktail.
  5. In a shaker cup, add a handful of ice. Then add the ingredients in order of least expensive to most. The reason you do this is to reduce the level of screw-up if you screw up. But you won’t – you got this. Add the ingredients in this order:
    1. Lime juice
    2. Agave Nectar
    3. Generous pinch of kosher salt
    4. tequila
  6. Cover the shaker cup and shake for approximately 15 seconds or until the cup begins to frost over.
  7. Pop the top of the shaker cup.
  8. Place your big fancy ice cube in a low ball glass. If you’re using regular ice, use 3-5 ice cubes.
  9. Strain the cocktail into the low ball glass.
  10. Garnish and serve!

NOTES

  • If you’re using a budget tequila, feel free to add some more agave nectar – it will help cut through the harshness.
  • We don’t salt the rim of the glass because we’re adding the salt to the cocktail. Salting the rim could possibly lead to an overly salty cocktail.
  • A reposado tequila will yield a more complex flavor profile for your cocktail. Using a blanco tequila will yield a cleaner, cripser tasting cocktail.
